Frequently Asked Questions

Below are answers to the questions most commonly asked by students who are thinking about pursuing an international away opportunity.

Does UIC-COM have any official international aways for medical students?

Yes, UIC-COM does have pre-set international away rotations that students can participate in.  Most of these can be found within the catalog of all 4th year rotations.  If you are unclear about what is being offered, contact the faculty member that is in charge of the M4 curriculum.

01

Where can I go, and how long can I be there?

Like most of the rotations during the M4 year, international away rotations are variable in length and location. Where a student goes and how long he or she stays there is highly dependent on factors such as the student's preference and what other requirements need to be fulfilled.  Keep in mind that approval of the actual site the student works at must be obtained if the student wants to get credit for the rotation.  See FAQ 03 for more information.

02

Do I get credit for doing an international away?

Yes, you may get credit for doing an international away.  There are several steps that must be completed prior to your receiving credit for an international away.   Aways set up through the school will usually have much of the preliminary steps completed to allow you to get credited for completing an away rotation.  If you are setting up your own international away, you need to go through the proper channels to ensure you get credit.  Whether you create your own rotation or participate in one organized by the school, learn what the requirements are before leaving for the rotation, because most require paperwork that has to be filled out while you are at your international site.

03

Do my loans/scholarships cover me during my international aways?

Both loans and scholarships should still cover your expenses while you are on an international away.  If you are unsure, contact the Financial Aid office and consult the information given you about the loan/scholarship.

Does Campus Care cover me while I'm abroad?

Currently, there is no coverage for students international aways through Campus Care.  Campus Care only covers students for care they receive at facilities within their network.  However, UIC's Study Abroad Office has a list of a number of organizations that provide health care coverage for students as they travel abroad.  If you are interested in obtaining travel  health insurance, click here to visit UIC's Study Abroad Office.  If you have private insurance, check with that company to find out their coverage.

What medical equipment should I bring for my trip?

The equipment you will need on your trip will vary depending on the site you travel to and you should ask your contacts what tools will be useful to you as you work.  That said, most students typically bring their stethoscopes.

06

How can I find out what attire is acceptable for working during my international rotation?

It is critically important that you are aware of the expectations the site has of you prior to your arrival.  Proper attire is both a cultural and professional necessity.  When determining the details of your international away, do not neglect to find out what the dress code is.  While it may seem like a trivial detail, being appropriately attired will help to improve the quality of all your interactions.
