Creating Your Own International Away Rotation

Many students decide to tailor their international away experience to fit their specific interests.  Some decide to join a trip organized by another school or medical organization while others create their own individual experience by directly contacting a hospital or clinic in a region of interest.

Create Your Own International Away

The general format is to

   1. Select a location.

   2. Create course plan and objectives.

   3. Get approval from appropriate bodies.

   4. Heal the world.

According to the University of Illinois College of Medicine website, the procedure for scheduling electives at Non LCME-Accredited Medical Schools is as follows: ï»¿

"The major difference [between an official elective at a LCME accredited school and an elective at a non-LCME accredited institution] is that more extensive documentation of the elective is usually required to justify the experience as substantially contributing to the student’s medical education. Students should provide a complete description of the experience including activities, objectives to be met, time spent, location, supervising faculty member, and mechanism for evaluation. In addition, a description of the institution itself should be included in the documentation. This can sometimes be photocopied from the school’s catalog and typically includes information about number of faculty, patients, facilities, etc.  These electives also require additional review and authorizations by UIC COM. It is strongly recommended that students who wish to take these elective experiences contact the M4 Advisor in the Office of Student Affairs at the earliest possible time."
